Here we go again. Today there was a news report that stated that we should stay away from certain tomatoes because of recent salmonella contamination. [See report on MSN.com entitled, Consumers Urged to Avoid Certain Tomatoes Amid Salmonella Scare]. The article mentions that 163 people in over 17 states have been infected. Tony Corbo, legislative representative for Food & Water Watch, was quoted saying that, ”the other problem with tomatoes is that they have shown up in restaurants and in salsa. So, maybe for the time being, consumers should stay away from anything that is processed”. Yeah right. I thought I was doing good by staying away from red meat, but now I have to watch out for my tomatoes? And get this, they say we should stay away from red plum, red Roma or round red tomatoes unless grown in certain areas (see list below). Hey, I thought all tomatoes were round. Well, I guess it’s better to be informed. Just in case, the signs of salmonella poisoning are:
diarhea
headaches
stomach cramps
nausea and vomiting
fever
Eat tomatoes from these areas: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, New York, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia, Belgium, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Israel, the Netherlands and Puerto Rico.
